While it may not be built for speed, it offers simplicity and quiet exploration, allowing you to scoot around the bay’s hidden gems at a leisurely pace. Whether you’re fishing or just exploring, the 17’ skiff is a perfect fit for those looking for an authentic, classic Chesapeake experience.

Why us

Backwater Expeditions was built around a lifelong connection to the Chesapeake Bay and a belief that some of the best experiences on the water happen away from crowded destinations and scripted tours.

Owned and operated by Captain Taylor, Backwater Expeditions blends local knowledge, maritime experience, ecotour guiding, and a practical understanding of the waterways that shape Virginia’s coastal communities. The goal is not simply to rent a boat or guide a trip, but to help guests experience a more authentic side of life on the water.

Captain Taylor is a licensed captain, Certified Virginia Ecotour Guide, Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional – Shoreline, and Leave No Trace certified guide with professional experience spanning marine emergency response, coastal resilience, shoreline systems, and years navigating local waterways throughout the Chesapeake region.

That background shapes every part of the experience — from safety and trip planning to understanding tides, weather, marsh ecology, working waterfront culture, wildlife, and the constantly changing character of the Bay itself.

Whether you are exploring by skiff or kayak, trips are intentionally designed to feel approachable, personal, flexible, and connected to the landscape rather than rushed or overproduced.

For families, photographers, first-time visitors, longtime Chesapeake locals, and anyone simply looking to slow down and experience the water differently, Backwater Expeditions offers more than a typical rental or tour.

It is a chance to experience the Chesapeake through the perspective of someone who lives and works on these waters every day.

Life on the water. Shared.
