The Fleet

At Backwater Expeditions, we believe in offering reliable, well-suited vessels that make exploring the Chesapeake Bay and its backwaters a memorable experience. Our fleet includes two boats—each with its own unique strengths—designed to help you get out on the water comfortably and safely.

17' York River Skiff

Our 2023 17’ York River Skiff is a locally handcrafted, old-school boat with classic lines built for the Chesapeake’s backwaters. Made right here in Shacklefords, VA, this boat is designed to handle the shallow, winding creeks and peaceful waters of the region with ease. Its 9.9 HP Mercury four-stroke engine provides a smooth, steady ride perfect for taking in the surroundings or casting a line.

While it may not be built for speed, it offers simplicity and quiet exploration, allowing you to scoot around the bay’s hidden gems at a leisurely pace. Whether you’re fishing or just exploring, the 17’ skiff is a perfect fit for those looking for an authentic, classic Chesapeake experience.

Max Capacity: 4 people or 800 lbs, whichever is less
Included: Fishing license, required safety gear, full tank of fuel
Available for self-guided full-day rentals from several convenient launch points.
